Phalaenopsis orchids require a moist medium with exceptional drainage. Your orchid may be planted in bark chips or sphagnum moss. Provide a thorough and even watering when bark or moss becomes fairly dry (approximately once a week). If there is a top covering of moss you can water through it. Make sure the pot drains throughly before placing it back in saucer.
Use of a fertilizer that is specifically for an orchid is best, but an all purpose house plant food is okay. If you’re looking for a specific fertilizer, give us a call and we can help point you in the right direction for what will work best in your environment and with your Phalaenopsis Orchid.
The Phalaenopsis Orchid requires a location with bright light, not direct sun. Try placing this plant inside your home in a shaded area in which the window is still able to shine onto the plant. Adding curtains which are easy to see through can also be an option, but it can be dicey if the Phalaenopsis Orchid will get enough light from this. Do not place your Phalaenopsis Orchid in direct sunlight, as on a sun porch or directly on the window sill, as this will likely kill your Phalaenopsis Orchid.
Ideal temperature range from 50 degrees-70 degrees. This is a great fall and spring plant for this reason. Be careful during hotter and colder temperatures, especially the first freeze, as this can shock the Phalaenopsis Orchid.
Phalaenopsis Orchids will re-flower yearly. Do not remove the flower spike completely. After the flowers fade cut the upper part of the flower spike back to the first node. It will then sprout a flower spike from the remaining node. This can be a great addition to your garden or your home each year, and it is a unique and beautiful flower.
